Sanskrit Literature of Haryana

Sanskrit has the first and highest position among all the ancient languages in the world. It is the mother of many ancient and (new) languages. Haryana was the abode of Vedic Aryans, so Sanskrit literature has been developing in Haryana since ancient times. Some famous litterateurs of Sanskrit literature are as follows:

Maharishi Ved Vyas

  • The epic of Mahabharata was composed by Maharishi Ved Vyas which has 18 Parv and 1 lakh Shlokas. He also composed Puranas and Gita.
  • The ashram of Maharishi Ved Vyas was ocated on the banks of the ancient holy river Daraswati in Haryana at a place called Shamyapras (Pehowa).
  • Harhavardhans

    In the post  Gupta period (7th centuary), king Harhavardhana of Thaneswar or Seriknha Janagada (modern Kurukshetra district) is Cedited with the credited with the  creation of three Sanskrit plays - Priyadarsika, Naganada and Ratnavali.

    Banabhatta

  • Banabhata wasde court poet of Harihavardhana. Banabhatta composed books such as Harshacharitam, Kadambari Chandikasakam, Parvati Parinaya Natakam and Mukundashakam, etc.
  • Harshacharitam is sad so be the most ancient fable of Sankrit literature.
  • Banabihatta had discussed the Maha Parana composed by Pushpadanta of Haryana in Harshacharit.  Also discussed Vayu Vicar (Prakrit poet) and Venibharata (poet of lingua rancal).
